Svaroopa is a Sanskrit word that means “the bliss of your own being.” Releasing the deep muscle tensions stored in the body results in the calming and stilling of the mind. In the moment that the mind becomes still, you experience blissfulness – which is actually our natural state of being!
A typical class is 75(Blissful Basics)to 90(Continuing) minutes long and begins and ends with a guided awareness of the body while you are in yoga’s pose of deep relaxation called “Shavasana.” In this pose we use blankets to raise your knees so that your spine leans more fully into the support of the floor. This begins the deep internal release of muscles surrounding the spine. After Shavasana we begin moving through various poses to warm-up and decompress your spine from the tailbone to the shoulders and neck. The class ends with a final Shavasana (relaxation) along with the same guided awareness. At the end of class you will find that your body has changed and that you are enjoying the differences.
No, each week the class is different. There are certain poses which you will repeat each week for continuity, but each class revolves around a theme and is varied.
No, newcomers to yoga are joyfully welcomed – just as are seasoned yoga students. The teacher’s clear instructions and personal attention combined with the use of props give every student access to the poses being taught in every class.
No, yoga will help you get into shape! You take each pose only as far as you want to take it. The result is a workout that is as challenging or as easy as you choose
No, Svaroopa Yoga will help you to become more flexible, no matter what your starting point is. Svaroopa Yoga is not about standing on your head or twisting into a pretzel, but rather about releasing tension in the core of your body and quieting your mind in order to discover the deeper dimension which is always inside you.
Yes, yoga is for everybody; however, if you have a serious health condition, please contact Karen or Lynda to discuss your individual situation. Depending on your condition, she may ask you to get a medical clearance from your health care provider before you attend class.
The Continuing classes range from 8-20. The Blissful Basics classes are usually 5-10. This allows the instructor to give both personal assistance with alignments as well as individual, hands-on adjustments to each student throughout every class.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing such as sweat pants, leggings, and tee-shirts – anything baggy. Avoid clothes that are constricting like jeans. Socks are optional.
Some people attend a yoga class once a week and find that can be beneficial. You will find that your yoga practice will get exponentially deeper and more satisfying, however, if you set aside some time to do yoga more regularly.
Svaroopa style is dramatically different in that it effectively works to relax the body and calm the mind – allowing you to reach through your mind into the inner dimensions of your true nature, which is blissfulness. Your sense of awareness is heightened as your body releases tension. As you become more comfortable in your body, your aches and pains begin to dissolve with each pose. This is a very healing style of yoga, and even if you only practice twice a week, its profound benefits are long-lasting.
